ERC Announces Key Changes to 2024 Calls and the Evaluation Process

The ERC has now announced the tentative dates for the 2024 calls and further details on research assessment, the evaluation process, and lump sum funding, to allow applicants enough time to prepare their proposals for the 2024 calls. Note that this information is all tentative, subject to the official adoption of the 2024 ERC Work Programme, which is expected in July 2023.

Novelties for the 2024 ERC Calls

There are a number of novelties expected in the 2024 ERC Work Programme that applicants need to be aware of:

  • Changes to the evaluation procedure – introducing a maximum number of proposals (44) per panel for 2024 Starting, Consolidator and Advanced Grant calls.
  • The 2024 Advanced Grant call will be implemented as a pilot call using lump sum funding (as previously reported by UKRO).
  • New panel in the SSH domain – SH8 – and changes to the panel descriptors for the SH and LS domains (as previously reported by UKRO).
  • Excellence remains the only evaluation criterion, with a primary evaluation of the research project and at the same time an evaluation of the Principal Investigator.
  • The applicant’s CV and Track Record are now merged into a single four-page document (as previously reported by UKRO).
  • The 2024 Proof-of-Concept call will have two cut-off dates instead of three.
  • The 2024 Consolidator Grant call is in December, two months earlier than in 2023.
  • The 2024 Advanced Grant call deadline is now in August, three months later than in 2023.
